Your First Barbell Day: From Dumbbell Corner to the Big Rack

2026-07-15

The barbell section is the dumbbell corner’s intimidating neighbor — plates clanging, racks occupied, unspoken protocols. But the barbell is just the logical next chapter of the strength story, and the empty bar (20kg of honest resistance) is exactly where every lifter’s chapter one began.

At a glance

The Empty Bar Truth

The unloaded barbell weighs 20kg (45lb) — a legitimate starting weight for squats and presses, and NOBODY who lifts judges an empty-bar session (they all had one; most still warm up with it). Plates are chapters two onward.

The Rack Settings

Squat rack setup: bar at collarbone height (you dip under it, not tiptoe up to it), safety pins just below your bottom squat position (the pins are why solo lifting is safe — set them every time). Two minutes of setup outranks any amount of courage.

The Starter Lifts

Week one barbell menu: goblet-to-barbell squats (the pattern transfers directly), the overhead press (strict, empty bar), and the deadlift learned with light plates or a coach’s eye (the hinge you built with kettlebells was the prerequisite — it transfers). Three lifts, months of progress runway.

How it works

The Etiquette Card

Strip your plates after, ask ‘how many sets left?’ during (never hover silently), and the universal rule — chalk and effort welcome, plate-slamming theatrical. The rack section runs on the same short napkin of manners as everywhere else; the barrier was always cosmetic.

Empty bar first, pins set always, three lifts, plates stripped after. The big rack was never a members-only zone — it was a queue you now know how to join.
